NATIONAL NUTRITION WEEK

National Nutrition Week (India)

What & When

National Nutrition Week is observed every year in India from September 1 to September 7.
It was first launched in 1982 by the Food & Nutrition Board under the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD).
The week is dedicated to spreading awareness about the importance of proper nutrition and healthy eating practices for all age groups.

Theme for 2025

The official theme for 2025 is:
“Eat Right for a Better Life”
This theme emphasizes the need for:

  • Balanced diets that ensure adequate intake of all essential nutrients.
  • Mindful eating habits that focus on quality, moderation, and sustainability.
  • Healthy food practices to prevent lifestyle disorders and enhance overall well-being.

Objectives & Significance

The campaign plays a vital role in promoting health and nutrition awareness across the country. Its main objectives are to:

  • Educate citizens about the role of nutrition in maintaining good health and productivity.
  • Prevent malnutrition in children, women, and vulnerable groups.
  • Curb lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease through better dietary choices.
  • Support flagship government initiatives such as:
    • POSHAN Abhiyaan (National Nutrition Mission)
    • Mid-Day Meal Scheme
    • Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS)
These interventions are implemented through schools, Anganwadi centers, and community programs, ensuring that the benefits reach grassroots levels.

POSHAN Abhiyaan: India’s Nutrition Mission

Launch & Vision

  • Launched on March 8, 2018 (International Women’s Day) in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan.
  • Led by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD).
  • Ambitious vision: To make India malnutrition-free by 2022 (efforts continue under extended plans).

Core Objectives & Strategic Focus

POSHAN Abhiyaan focuses on reducing:

  • Stunting in children (low height-for-age).
  • Undernutrition (low weight-for-age).
  • Anemia among women and children.
  • Low birth weight in newborns.

Annual targets included:

  • Reducing stunting by ~2% per year.
  • Reducing anemia by ~3% per year.
  • Reducing underweight and low birth weight by ~2% per year.

The original goal was to bring down child stunting from 38.4% (NFHS-4, 2015-16) to 25% by 2022.

POSHAN Abhiyaan 2.0 (Mission POSHAN 2.0)

Also known as Saksham Anganwadi and POSHAN 2.0, this upgraded mission integrates broader interventions, including:

  • Supplementary nutrition for children, adolescents, and women.
  • Maternal and adolescent nutrition programs.
  • Management of Severe and Moderate Acute Malnutrition (SAM/MAM).
  • Promotion of dietary diversity and locally available food.
  • Integration of AYUSH practices for wellness and preventive healthcare.

Impact So Far (Based on NFHS-5 Data, 2019–21)

POSHAN Abhiyaan and related interventions have shown measurable improvements:

  • Stunting (under-5 children): Declined from 38.4% (NFHS-4) to 35.5% (NFHS-5).
  • Wasting (low weight-for-height): Reduced from 21.0% to 19.3%.
  • Underweight (children under-5): Dropped from 35.8% to 32.1%.

Though challenges remain, these indicators show steady progress toward improved child and maternal nutrition.

Conclusion

National Nutrition Week serves as a powerful reminder of the crucial link between nutrition and national development. By promoting healthier food habits, spreading awareness, and reinforcing government programs like POSHAN Abhiyaan, India is working steadily towards a healthier, stronger, and more productive society.
