It marks the birth anniversary of <strong data-start=\"306\" data-end=\"322\">Lord Ganesha<\/strong>, the son of <strong data-start=\"335\" data-end=\"349\">Lord Shiva<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"354\" data-end=\"373\">Goddess Parvati<\/strong>, who is worshipped as the remover of obstacles (<em data-start=\"422\" data-end=\"435\">Vighnaharta<\/em>), the god of wisdom, prosperity, and new beginnings.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"497\" data-end=\"527\"><strong data-start=\"500\" data-end=\"525\">Historical Background<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul data-start=\"528\" data-end=\"1474\">\n<li data-start=\"528\" data-end=\"961\">\n<p data-start=\"530\" data-end=\"961\">According to Hindu scriptures, <strong data-start=\"561\" data-end=\"608\">Lord Ganesha was created by Goddess Parvati<\/strong> out of sandalwood paste to guard her while she bathed. When Lord Shiva returned and Ganesha refused to let him enter, Shiva, in anger, beheaded him. Later, to calm Parvati\u2019s grief, Shiva restored Ganesha\u2019s life by fixing the head of an elephant on his body. From then, Ganesha came to be worshipped as the <strong data-start=\"915\" data-end=\"958\">first deity to be invoked in any ritual<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"963\" data-end=\"1147\">\n<p data-start=\"965\" data-end=\"1147\">The celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi is believed to have <strong data-start=\"1021\" data-end=\"1056\">started during the Maratha rule<\/strong> under \u00a0to promote culture and nationalism.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1474\">\n<p data-start=\"1151\" data-end=\"1474\">The festival gained <strong data-start=\"1171\" data-end=\"1215\">mass popularity in the late 19th century<\/strong> when <strong data-start=\"1221\" data-end=\"1253\">Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak<\/strong> revived it during the freedom movement.
